A number of Facebook threads on Sunday night tracked the identity of yarmulke-wearing actor Geza Rohrig, who played the lead role in the Hungarian-made Holocaust film “Son of Saul,” winner of the Best Foreign Language Film.
Rohrig wore a yarmulke while striding down the red carpet at Cannes, where “Son of Saul” was first screened, and again in Los Angeles for the Golden Globes award ceremony on Sunday night.
Saul is portrayed by Rohrig, the founder of an underground punk band who moved to New York from Budapest, studied in a Hasidic yeshiva in Israel and then graduated from the Conservative Movement’s Jewish Theological Seminary.
A profile about the actor in the Los Angeles Times reported that Rohrig’s yarmulke at Cannes was “a big felt number with clips glinting in the afternoon sun, the paparazzi snapping photos, the festival’s famed announcer bellowing names from the film, the tuxedos massing around him.”

The actor, who is also a poet and writer, was an orphan who spent much of his childhood, from age 4 through 11, in an orphanage, until he was adopted at 12 by a Jewish family and eagerly adapted his new family’s more religious lifestyle.
He now lives in Riverdale, New York, and is the father of four, two from his previous marriage and twins born a year ago with his new wife.
