A one-year-old child was killed Saturday in an accident in the southern town of Rahat, police and medics said.

Magen David Adom medics who were called to the predominately Bedouin town said the girl was in a critical condition when they arrived. She was transferred to the nearby Soroka hospital in Beersheba, but died of her injuries.

Police initially said they were searching for the driver of the car, and called it a hit-and-run accident. Later reports, however, said the baby had been inadvertently hit by a car driven by a relative near their home, and that the father and the relative alerted the emergency authorities.
