Police on Sunday night arrested a Beit She’an man on suspicion of stabbing his wife to death and trying to commit suicide afterwards by drinking gasoline.
The 36-year-old man managed to drink a non-lethal quantity of gasoline in a nearby cemetery before police officers stopped him and took him to Ha’emek Medical Center in Afula in moderate condition.
Two of the couple’s three children were at home at the time of the murder, Ynet reported. The 14 and 9-year-old daughters witnessed the murder, while the 12-year-old daughter was already at boarding school.
Initial investigations carried out by Beit She’an police found that the wife suffered a single, mortal stab wound. The husband fled the home thereafter, and was found by officers in the cemetery trying to set himself alight.
The motive behind the murder was unknown, and there were no reports of recent conflicts between the two. The wife had filed domestic violence charges against her husband in 2006, but the case was closed.
