The Cannes Film Festival won’t announce its full 2012 lineup until Thursday, but Israel’s already on the list of countries that will be represented.
“Dog Leash,” a short film by Tel Aviv University student Eti Tsicko, will compete as part of the festival’s Cinefondation Selection, facing off against 14 other student films. Among the other movies, chosen from more than 1,700 submissions, will be “Behind Me Olive Trees,” the first student film ever to represent Lebanon.
Also announced Tuesday were the short films that will compete at Cannes — a total of 10 entries culled from more than 4,500 submissions. For the first time, a film from Syria will be in the mix.
Few details about the films have been released so far, but the Syrian film may deal with Israel and the Palestinians. Called “Waiting for a P.O. Box” in English, its transliterated original title, “Falastein, Sandouk Al Intezar Lil Burtuqal,” appears to include the Arabic word for Palestine.
