The Ontario branch of the Canadian Federation of Students unanimously passed a resolution to boycott Israel.
One of the group’s executive members, Anna Goldfinch, said the resolution “endorses a number of solidarity tactics that have been called for by Palestinian civil society,” according to the Canadian Press. She said it represents an endorsement of the movement to boycott, divest from and sanction Israel, known as BDS.
The organization represents 300,000 students. The resolution was put forward by the Students’ Union at Ryerson University. Rajean Hoilett, the union’s president, said Ontario schools should not “remain complicit” with what he called “Israeli war crimes,” according to the Canadian Press.
Hoilett said the union has planned a series of panel discussions on the current conflict between Israel and Hamas, and will not allow space for anti-Semitism or Islamophobia.
Help us report truthfully on social media
As a multimedia journalist, my job is to take the quality, fact-based journalism produced by The Times of Israel newsroom and make it accessible across every platform — from Instagram posts to podcasts to short-form videos.
This is how many, especially young people, consume news these days. But misinformation is rampant on social media. Our team at ToI produces accurate, responsible short-form reporting on Israel and the Jewish world.
If you believe in the importance of factual social media journalism, please consider joining our reader support group, The Times of Israel Community. Your financial support is essential to sustain responsible multimedia reporting.
