Sarah Silverman, the Grammy-nominated Jewish comedienne with a penchant for deploying sarcasm when tackling controversial and risque issues, faced a backlash on the social network Twitter over the past few days after tweeting that Jesus was “gender fluid.”
Silverman has a strong following on Twitter, and uses it to deliver snarky, irreverent remarks to over 7.5 million followers.
On Christmas Day, she wished her followers an all-caps “MERRY CHRISTMAS!” and informed them helpfully that “Jesus was gender fluid!”
Five heart icons followed the remark.

The tweet was a favorite among her fans, who retweeted it 1,100 times and “liked” it 3,300 times.
But it also sparked a backlash, starting with the straightforward “No he wasn’t!”
