Baby drowns in bucket of paint in Netivot

Medics find 1-year-old in critical condition, but fail to clear his lungs

A 1-year-old baby drowned on Monday in a bucket of paint in a home in the southern city of Netivot.

MDA medics who were called to the scene said they found the baby in critical condition and began performing CPR and trying to get the paint out of his lungs.

Despite their efforts, they were eventually forced to proclaim his death.

His family members, who live in a ground-floor apartment, told the Ynet news site that the baby disappeared for a few moments before they found him in a bucket of paint in the garden.

The family has eight children, the youngest of whom was born about a month ago.

Over the past decade, 19 children have died as a result of drowning in a bucket or tub, according to data provided by the Beterem child safety activism group.

“As we approach the Passover holiday, many homes are currently undergoing renovations and thorough cleaning, which can be dangerous when there are children present,” Beterem CEO Orly Silbinger said.
