WATCH: Court detains man who sealed his daughter in a bucket

A Jerusalem court on Monday ordered an Abu Ghosh man suspected of abusing his daughter to remain in police custody after a video published online showed him closing his two-year-old girl in an airtight bucket.

The video appeared to show the man forcibly putting the girl in the five gallon plastic bucket and closing the lid, “in order to teach her,” as she wailed. “I’m taking you to the butcher because I’m sick of you,” he can be heard saying in Arabic in the video shared on the Walla news website. A little boy, presumably the man’s son, shouts as he pushes the lid down atop the girl’s head to snap in place.

The girl’s mother was the one filming the brief clip, which was shared on social media. Neither of the parents’ names were released for publication. The family resides in the Arab village of Abu Ghosh, less than 10 miles west of Jerusalem on the main highway to Tel Aviv.

“I was just joking with her, it lasted less than a half a minute,” he told reporters in the Jerusalem Magistrate’s Court.

The police checked with social services to see if the children could be removed from their parents’ custody, Walla reported. They sought an extension of his remand by three days, but the court granted just one.

The suspect’s lawyer dismissed the claims of child abuse against his client, saying “it’s a clip that lasted two to five seconds. His wife, who filmed the video, wasn’t arrested. It was done as a game and the child wasn’t hurt.”
