Members of the ultra-Orthodox group Neturei Karta, who oppose Jewish sovereignty in the Holy Land in the absence of the messiah, burned Israeli flags in Jerusalem and in Bnei Brak on Thursday to protest Israel’s 64th Independence Day.
Men and boys from the group, considered outside the mainstream, wore sackcloth and carried signs decrying Zioinism as an anti-Jewish movement.
Meanwhile, the night before, police in Tel Aviv prevented a small group of left-wing activists from holding protests urging Israel to observe Independence Day, not as an Israeli triumph, but as a Palestinian catastrophe.
