12 Torah scrolls stolen from synagogue in Paris suburb

At least twelve Torah scrolls were stolen overnight Sunday-Monday from the Grand Synagogue of Levallois, located on the outskirts of Paris, local media reports.
The synagogue’s rabbi, Chalom Lellouche, discovered the theft Monday morning while preparing to host a bar mitzvah ceremony at the synagogue, according to Le Parisien.
Police were immediately notified and are currently investigating the case.
The synagogue is said to be protected by cameras and extensive surveillance systems. Initial reports indicate that two individuals broke into the building and removed the scrolls in what was likely a well-planned operation.
The community was targeted “at what is most sacred and precious to it,” says Levallois mayor Agnès Pottier-Dumas.
