British base in Cyprus evacuated after sirens sound

A British sovereign base in Cyprus was being evacuated on Monday after sirens sounded, an AFP correspondent said.

About 70 cars were seen leaving the Akrotiri base area on the southern coast of the Mediterranean island, the correspondent said, adding that most of them bore civilian license plates.

In addition to British and other military personnel, the base also houses civilians working there.

Video showed jets scrambling to try intercept a drone.
