Egypt army statement on number of casualties contradicts eyewitness reports

Official statements by the Egyptian military contradict eyewitness reports on dozens of casualties among its troops.

While reports from news agencies put the number of dead among Egyptian troops at more than 50, with some going as high as 70, an official army statement says 17 army officials were killed, including four officers, and 13 others were wounded.

“The armed forces succeeded in handling the terrorists and preventing them from achieving their goals. We killed at least 100 terror activists and wounded many others, and we destroyed 20 vehicles used by the terror activists,” a statement from the military was quoted by Ynet as saying.
