Gunfire continues in Kafr Kanna despite arrests, reported truce between warring families

Despite dozens of overnight arrests and the truce ostensibly declared last night between two warring families in Kafr Kanna, intermittent shooting is still heard throughout the town.

Twenty minutes after a long spate of gunfire, which saw startled pedestrians rush for cover in nearby stores, around a dozen police vehicles are seen trickling into the village on its main road.

Last night, assailants set off a grenade by dropping it from a drone onto a private home, wounding four people, including one seriously. The explosion took place as masked, armed men roamed the streets and shot at storefronts.

Residents say the violence is linked to a dispute between the Awawdeh and Taha families. As gunshots rang out last night, Sheikh Kamal Khatib, who runs the reconciliation committee that works to stem the violence in the town, convened elders from both families to reinstate a truce between them.

“In a normal country, we wouldn’t have to do this,” Mansour Dahamshe, another member of Kafr Kanna’s reconciliation committee, tells The Times of Israel. “This is the task of the police, but in the absence of the police, in the absence of legal means, we are forced to do this.”

Police say they arrested 34 suspects overnight linked to the violence, but it is unclear how many remain in custody, and the violence persists unabated.

At around noon, masked gunmen entered a business near the town’s entrance and shot at an employee, wounding him in the torso. He was taken to the hospital with light injuries, Magen David Adom says.

Police have not responded to a request for comment regarding arrests in connection to the shooting today.
