The IDF rejects claims by UNIFIL that Israeli tank fire endangered peacekeepers in southern Lebanon overnight, saying its forces were striking Hezbollah terror infrastructure near the town of Khiam.
According to the military, minutes after the strike was carried out, UNIFIL requested that fire be halted, asserting that the attack had taken place near its forces operating in the area.
The IDF says that assertion is incorrect, adding that no UNIFIL personnel were identified in the vicinity at the time of the strike – a conclusion it says was confirmed by a preliminary investigation into the incident.
The IDF’s statement follows a UNIFIL report late last night alleging that two Israeli tanks fired several shells near peacekeepers in southern Lebanon, accusing Israel of repeatedly endangering its personnel in what it described as violations of UN Security Council Resolution 1701.
UNIFIL said no peacekeepers were injured in the incident.
