Police on alert as Hapoel-Celtic match set to kick off in Beersheba
Add ToI as a Preferred Source on GoogleA highly anticipated soccer match between Hapoel Beersheba and Celtic FC is set to kick off in the southern Israeli city, with police on high alert for any disturbances after Palestinian flags were flown during the first leg of the match in Scotland.
Spokesman Micky Rosenfeld earlier said hundreds of police would be deployed in and around the stadium to “ensure that it is a sport event and not a political event,” and that flags will be removed if necessary.
At least some Scottish flags, some with slogans, are seen aloft in the packed stadium.
Political banners and protests are banned at matches organized by the Union of European Football Associations.
The winner of the contest will advance to the 32-team European Champions League.
