Police ‘surprised’ PM with request for testimony in submarine affair

Anti-fraud police investigators reportedly surprised Prime Minister Benjamin Netantyahu by requesting his testimony in their investigation into a conflict-of-interest case involving a $2 billion purchase of German submarines and some of Netanyahu’s closest associates.

Netanyahu was expected to be questioned as a suspect in a separate corruption case involving the country’s telecom giant, Bezeq. But police later said investigators had only questioned Netanyahu over the so-called submarine affair. Hadashot news reports that investigators “surprised” Netanyahu with the request at the start of the 5-hour questioning earlier today.

Netanyahu’s personal attorney, who is also his cousin, represented the German firm involved and is suspected of using his influence over the prime minister in return for a hefty cut of the deal.
