Three detained after Haredi rioters block attempted arrest of draft dodger overnight
Chaos broke out in Ramat Gan, central Israel, overnight after Military Police tried to arrest an ultra-Orthodox yeshiva student found to be evading the draft.
Dozens of Haredi protesters met the Military Police officers at the site of the attempted arrest and surrounded the police vehicle, footage published by Ynet shows. Several protesters could be seen in the footage sitting directly in front of the car, blocking the law enforcement members from moving through the crowd.
A group of protesters then flipped the police car over.
Footage taken later in the night, after the protesters had been pushed back, shows police officers returning the vehicle upright, with no visible damage done to it.
Three of the protesters were arrested, Ynet reports, although the draft dodger himself was not arrested, as he was not at home.
An Army Radio correspondent reports that the draft dodger had been home when police arrived, but managed to slip away and fled to his yeshiva amid the unrest outside.
