Turkel committee approves Alsheich as next top cop

The Turkel Commission has approved the appointment of Roni Alsheich, the deputy Shin Bet chief, as the next Israel Police commissioner.

Israel’s been without a permanent police chief since Yochanan Danino stepped down in July. Gal Hirsch, a former IDF general who was tapped by Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan, dropped his nomination amid rumors of financial misconduct, paving the way for Alsheich’s nomination.

Alsheich, a father of seven who lives in the Tel Aviv suburb of Givat Shmuel, is nationalist religious and formerly lived in a West Bank settlement.
