US envoy to UN: ‘Hamas must ensure release’ of Israeli soldier

After both President Barack Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry issued condemnations, Powers wrote on Twitter: “strongly condemn attack on Israeli soldiers that broke #Gaza ceasefire. Hamas must ensure immediate release of missing Israeli soldier.”
The wording of Power’s tweet left open the possibility that Hamas, which had acquiesced to a ceasefire that began some ninety minutes before the attack, was not responsible for the attack, but that it could secure 2nd-Lt. Hadar Goldin’s release.
