Around 100 Iranians are set to be deported from the US back to Iran, as part of an arrangement between US President Donald Trump’s administration and the Islamic Republic, The New York Times reports, citing Iranian officials.
A charter plane carrying the deportees took off from Louisiana yesterday and is scheduled to land in Qatar before making its way to Iran in the coming hours.
Those on board include both men and women, including some who asked to be sent back and some who had not, after being detained in the US for months amid a wide crackdown on illegal immigration. According to the officials cited by the Times, those on board had either been denied asylum or had not yet appeared before a judge.
The US has historically given shelter to Iranians fleeing persecution at home, though some have been sent back in the past.
An official tells the paper that the return flight is being coordinated by Tehran’s Foreign Ministry, which has provided assurances that the deportees will not be harmed upon their return.
