Two people were killed Wednesday night when a car overturned on a Jerusalem street and then careened into a pedestrian, the Israel Police said.
A man, 78, who was a passenger in the car, and a woman, 19, walking along the street, were declared dead at the scene.
Another woman, 76, who was driving the car was seriously injured. Both of the car’s occupants were residents of the city.
The accident happened on Azriel Hildesheimer Street in the German Colony neighborhood. The narrow street is in some parts steeply inclined and there was heavy rain on Wednesday night. Many roads in the area become shallow streams in rainstorms.
An initial police investigation found that the car was apparently traveling fast along the street and for unknown reasons hit a safety barrier. The car then overturned and continued to slide down the street, hitting the pedestrian.

Responsibly covering this tumultuous time
As The Times of Israel’s political correspondent, I spend my days in the Knesset trenches, speaking with politicians and advisers to understand their plans, goals and motivations.
I'm proud of our coverage of this government's plans to overhaul the judiciary, including the political and social discontent that underpins the proposed changes and the intense public backlash against the shakeup.
