A police officer was detained for questioning Monday evening after being caught driving dangerously while drunk.

The police car was pulled over by traffic cops, a police spokesperson said.

The vehicle had been seen weaving along the road between the Negev towns of Ashalim and Shivta, Channel 10 reported.

Police said the officer was asked to take a breathalyzer test. The results led to his police license being revoked on the spot.

Information about the incident was transferred to the State Prosecutor’s Office and the officer was given a compulsory leave of absence subject to a hearing.

“The Israel Police expects all of its officers to be personal exemplars of obeying the law and will act with extra stringency against any police officer found to be driving under the influence,” police said. “Doubly so if he does it while on duty.”
