Police probing gunfire at Jewish-owned bakery in Toronto as possible hate crime
Windows smashed at other location of same business, police say they’re investigating connection; Sa’ar says Canada must act, amid record-breaking wave of antisemitic attacks

Toronto police said Sunday that they were investigating a weekend shooting at a Jewish-owned bakery in the city as a potential hate crime.
A branch of Kiva’s Bagel Bar was targeted by gunfire overnight between Saturday and Sunday, and another branch elsewhere in Toronto had its windows smashed.
There were no injuries in either incident.
In a statement, the Toronto Police confirmed that the hate crime unit and gun and gang task force were investigating the incidents, and examining whether they were connected to one another.
In a press conference covered, a police representative acknowledged that the incidents were “concerning” for “members of the Jewish community” in the area, and said that there would be increased police presence in the area as the investigation proceeds.
Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar said on X that he was “following with concern the worrying news from Toronto.”
“While thankfully none were injured, this is the latest attack in a long and horrifying line of violence and intimidation against the Canadian Jewish community,” he wrote, calling for the Canadian government to “confront this antisemitic violent wave!”

Police in Toronto last month said that hired gunmen appeared to be targeting Jewish sites in the city.
Gunfire and arson attacks have repeatedly hit synagogues and other Jewish sites in Toronto and other Canadian cities, without causing any fatalities.
By May 2026, Canada’s Jewish community had experienced more violent antisemitic attacks than all of last year, putting it on track to be the most violent year for the Jewish community in recent memory.
The 400,000-strong Canadian Jewish community has been among the hardest hit by antisemitism since the Hamas terror group launched its war against Israel on October 7, 2023.
Since the Hamas rampage in Israel, a Toronto Jewish girls’ school was hit with gunfire in overnight shootings three times, two Jewish institutions in Montreal were hit by firebombings, three men attempted to kidnap Jewish women, antisemitic graffiti was daubed on three synagogues in Nova Scotia, and a Jewish man in Montreal was beaten in front of his children.
