Police still unsure of motive behind Nahariya stabbing

Suspected assailant, a 16-year-old, confesses to attacking Border Patrol officer, but says act came after argument

Police investigators said Saturday they were still unsure whether the stabbing of a Border Patrol officer in the northern Israeli town of Nahariya Friday was criminally or nationalistically motivated, a police spokesperson said.

The 37-year-old policeman was stabbed twice in the back.

The suspected assailant, a 16-year-old from a village in the Galilee, fled the scene of the assault, close to the city’s central bus station, but was apprehended by security forces some two hours after the incident.

The youth confessed to the act, but said in his confession that he and the officer had argued before the stabbing took place.

The Border Police officer sustained what were classed as light wounds. He said that the teen jumped him from behind and stabbed him.
