A trip to the Moon via feasting and ‘Fauda’
OurCrowd Global Investor Summit on Feb. 15 showcases Israel’s startup nation for thousands of global visitors
Israel’s President, the country’s best-known chef, and its most famous TV star walk into a room with some of the world’s wealthiest people.
No, it’s not the first line of a joke. It’s the top of the guest list for the 2023 OurCrowd Global Investor Summit which takes place in Jerusalem on Feb. 15, where headline speakers include President Isaac Herzog, – and “Fauda” star and co-creator Lior Raz.
They will be joined by SpaceIL Chairman and Amdocs founder Morris Kahn, “Start-Up Nation” author Saul Singer, Yossi Cohen of SoftBank, WHO Foundation CEO Anil Soni and a Who’s Who of global investors in high-tech innovation.
The OurCrowd Summit is the largest investment event in the Middle East. Returning for the first time since 2020, with a regional landscape transformed by the Abraham Accords, large delegations and prominent business guests are expected to attend from across the Middle East and North Africa who will participate in a discussion on “What’s Next for the Middle East: Insights from Leaders of a Regional Power.”
The event will start at 9AM at Binyanei Ha’Uma, Jerusalem’s International Convention Center. Tickets are $199 in advance and $249 on the door.
OurCrowd, based in Jerusalem, is one of the world’s largest online equity investment platforms, giving accredited investors access to private startup deals previously available only to the super rich. Now celebrating its 10th anniversary, OurCrowd has 220,000 registered investors from 195 countries. It has attracted $2.1 billion in investment commitments for 380 portfolio companies and 42 funds.
‘World has changed’
“We see that in the three years since the last OurCrowd Summit, the world has changed, presenting major challenges that need the solutions that only technology can provide,” says Jon Medved, CEO and Founder of OurCrowd. “Our companies are helping to solve problems in health equity, food and agriculture, cybersecurity, clean energy and alternative proteins, all of which have been exacerbated by the Covid pandemic, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the subsequent global energy crisis, and severe climate challenges.”
In January, OurCrowd notched up the 61st exit from its portfolio with the $80 million IPO on Nasdaq of Freightos, a digital platform for freight forwarding that counts FedEx and Qatar Airways among its investors. Freightos CEO and Founder Zvi Schreiber will attend the Summit, together with more than 200 senior executives from the OurCrowd startup portfolio.
The theme of the gathering is “Startups Saving the Planet.” Speakers will address how technology can help solve some of the world’s major challenges that have been exacerbated by the Covid pandemic and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Sessions include discussions and live demos of tech on alternative proteins, climate change, sustainable and renewable energy, health equity, cybersecurity and transportation.
Israeli super chefs Michal Ansky of MasterChef and Nir Zook of the startup Plantish, Fresh Start FoodTech incubator CEO Noga Sela Shalev, Dr. Lara Ramdin of Dole Foods and other experts will discuss innovations in food technology and alternative proteins. A flight simulator and prototype of Air EV’s “flying car” One Zero will be on hand at the venue.
Popular summit sessions include “Eat the Sharks,” where VCs pitch startups; “Demo Theater,” an opportunity to see the tech of the future in action; and “Top Ten Tech Trends,” an advance preview of what will be hot, disruptive, and open to investment in the coming year.
