A Palestinian man wanted by security forces was shot and seriously injured during a counterterrorism operation in the West Bank on Wednesday, the Israel Police said.

The man, in his 30s, was shot in his lower body as he tried to escape a Border Police special anti-terror unit near Ramallah, police said in a statement Thursday.

He was taken to Hadassah Hospital Ein Kerem in Jerusalem for treatment.

All other details of the case are restricted under a gag order, police said.

Ramallah, the seat of the Palestinian Authority government, is in Area A of the West Bank, which according to the Oslo Accords between Israel and the Palestinians is under PA security and administrative control.

For several years, the Palestinians have demanded that Israeli security forces cease entering Area A for arrest raids.
