Egyptian fencer Alaaeldin Abouelkassem won the first medal for his country at the London Games on Tuesday.
Abouelkassem took home the silver medal after he lost in the finals to Lei Sheng of China.
The victory was the first ever for the Arab nation in the fencing category, and Abouelkassem was the first Arab man to advance to the finals of the men’s individual foil.
Abouelkaseem said he was happy to be the first African or Arab to achieve such a result.
En route to the podium, the Egyptian beat Andrea Cassara of Italy, ranked number one in the world.
