GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip — Israeli forces shot and killed a Palestinian man on Sunday at the border fence with the Gaza Strip.

An Israeli military spokeswoman said IDF forces shot the man after he ignored warning shots as he sneaked toward the border. She spoke anonymously citing military regulations.

A hospital official said the 23-year-old man died early Monday of wounds sustained earlier. He spoke anonymously because he wasn’t authorized to speak to the media.

The area near the fence is frequently used by militants to fire rockets at nearby Jewish communities, but sometimes others like the mentally disabled enter the vicinity, not understanding its dangers.

Palestinian medics said the man was unarmed and that he was mentally unfit, according to Reuters. They added that they had to wait two hours for permission to pick the man up.

The incident comes amid an upsurge in attacks from the Gaza Strip. Palestinian terrorists in the Strip launched 96 attacks at Israel in October, including the firing of 116 rockets and 55 mortar shells.
