A man was shot dead as he sat in his car near a mosque in the northern town of Zemer on Thursday by an unknown gunman who fled the scene.

Magen David Adom ambulance crews attended to the critically wounded victim, age 62, shortly after the shooting.

He later died of his injuries.

Police began an investigation into the incident.

Police are also checking if the shooting is connected to other similar attacks that have happened in the area recently.

A school principal was shot dead by a masked gunman last month during a staff meeting at the Amal school in the central Arab-Israeli city of Taibe.

According to witnesses, the gunman opened fire directly at the principal, Yussuf Haj Yahya, then fled the area on foot.
