A Solomon Schechter day school in New Jersey shut down three weeks before classes were due to begin.
The Solomon Schechter School of the Raritan Valley in East Brunswick announced in an email to parents on Aug. 7 that the school would not reopen for financial reasons, the Forward reported.
“Unfortunately, I have to confirm what is, for all of us, the worst possible news for our school,” said the email, sent from the head of school. “Based on our current financial situation, the Board has voted to begin the process of closing down the school, effective immediately.”
Enrollment at the school, which served students from kindergarten to eighth grade, had dropped to 120 last year from a peak of 300 students. At the final parents meeting, according to the Forward, only 40 children were still enrolled.
Help us report truthfully on social media
As a multimedia journalist, my job is to take the quality, fact-based journalism produced by The Times of Israel newsroom and make it accessible across every platform — from Instagram posts to podcasts to short-form videos.
This is how many, especially young people, consume news these days. But misinformation is rampant on social media. Our team at ToI produces accurate, responsible short-form reporting on Israel and the Jewish world.
If you believe in the importance of factual social media journalism, please consider joining our reader support group, The Times of Israel Community. Your financial support is essential to sustain responsible multimedia reporting.
