Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas was set to meet with Jordan’s King Abdullah on Thursday to review a recent letter he received recently from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on restarting peace talks.
The meeting was the first stop of a round of discussions with regional Arab leaders on the subject, Israel Radio reported.
Abbas is scheduled to meet with the head of Egypt’s military council General Muhammad Hussein Tantawi later in the week and will review the letter with him as well.
The text of the letter has not been released, but Palestinian officials were reportedly nonplussed by the contents, which they said contained nothing new.
According to a report in Haaretz, the letter included a pledge by Netanyahu to create a demilitarized Palestinian state, though not within the 1967 borders. It also called on Abbas to work with Israel’s new unity coalition.
