A 12-year-old Bedouin boy was seriously hurt after a grenade he touched exploded in his backyard on Friday morning, medics said.

According to the Ynet news site, the boy’s family said that before the explosion he was playing with the grenade.

He was brought from a town in the Negev Desert to a main highway near the city of Dimona, and from there medics took him to Beersheba’s Soroka Medical Center, the Magen David Adom ambulance service said.

There was no immediate comment from police on the incident.

Separately, four people, including an 11-year-old boy were wounded in a shooting incident in the southern Bedouin town of Ar’ara BaNegev late Thursday, medics said.

A 21-year-old man was in a serious condition, while three others, including the boy, were in moderate condition, Magen David Adom said.

All four were taken to the Soroka hospital.

Police said the shooting was part of an ongoing feud between rival clans in the town. A 20-year-old suspect was detained overnight, and his remand is expected to be extended Friday, police said.

Law enforcement officials said two others are currently under arrest over the ongoing feud.

Arab communities in Israel have seen a surge in violence in recent years, driven mainly, but not exclusively, by organized crime. Arab Israelis blame police, who they say have failed to crack down on powerful criminal organizations and largely ignore the violence, which includes family feuds, mafia turf wars and violence against women.

The Arab community has also suffered from decades of neglect.

The Abraham Initiatives, which monitors and campaigns against violence in the Arab community, said there were 125 Arabs — an all-time record — killed in Israel in 2021 as a result of violence and crime.
