2 men killed as light plane crashes near Jerusalem

Aircraft took off from airfield in central Israel and was meant to land near Masada; searches were launched after contact was lost

Two men were killed Saturday when their light aircraft crashed outside the town of Mevo Beitar, near Jerusalem.

Police said the plane took off from an airfield in central Israel and was meant to land near Masada, but authorities lost contact with the craft over the Jerusalem Hills.

Officers searching the area found the crashed plane.

The victims were in their 30s and 60s. Medics called to the scene pronounced them both dead. They were not immediately named.

An investigation was opened into the incident.
