IDF soldier dies of rare disease

Combat soldier complained of headaches week before collapsing

An IDF soldier from the combat engineers died on Thursday from a rare disease that left doctors unable to save his life.

The soldier, 20, who served in a support role in the engineers’ elite Yahalom unit, had complained last week of headaches and was given common pain-killers. However, on Sunday, he collapsed and was taken to Tel Aviv’s Sheba Hospital, where doctors diagnosed him with a disease that has a high mortality rate.

Details of the exact illness were not immediately released. An IDF statement said the disease involved was extremely rare and that the medical treatment he had received was appropriate. Nonetheless, the IDF Chief Medical Officer announced the establishment of an investigative committee to look into the incident.
