1,000 days since disaster: Protests and memorial events mark Oct. 7 milestone

Protests and memorial events are being held throughout Israel this morning to mark 1,000 days since the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led assault on Israel, the worst terror attack in the country’s history.

Protests against the government are being held at numerous intersections.

At Re’im, in the south, families of victims hold a memorial event at the scene of the Nova music festival massacre.

The focus of many of the protests is the government’s refusal to set up a state committee of investigation, the country’s most powerful investigative body, to investigate the failures of Oct. 7. The government claims that due to its efforts to curb the powers of the judiciary, a state committee, appointed by the Supreme Court, will be biased against it. It has sought to form a government-appointed commission. Critics say the government fears it will be blamed for the disaster, and are outraged that it seeks to appoint its own investigators.
