The Israeli Air Force names its first female female commander of an aviation squadron, the army says.
The major, who can only be referred to by the first Hebrew letter of her name, “Tet,” will receive a promotion to lieutenant colonel in order to take over as head of a squadron of transport planes.
“She will be the first female pilot to have this position and to have this rank,” the army says.
There have been non-pilot female officers with this rank and who have commanded ground-based IAF squadrons.
“In addition, Maj. ‘Mem’ was appointed to command the [air force’s] operational command and control unit and will be promoted to lieutenant colonel. She will be the first female air traffic controller to reach this rank,” the army adds.

Help us report truthfully on social media
As a multimedia journalist, my job is to take the quality, fact-based journalism produced by The Times of Israel newsroom and make it accessible across every platform — from Instagram posts to podcasts to short-form videos.
This is how many, especially young people, consume news these days. But misinformation is rampant on social media. Our team at ToI produces accurate, responsible short-form reporting on Israel and the Jewish world.
If you believe in the importance of factual social media journalism, please consider joining our reader support group, The Times of Israel Community. Your financial support is essential to sustain responsible multimedia reporting.
