Police say they nabbed a motorcyclist after he was seen zipping down a highway at 285 kilometers per hour (178 mph), the highest speed a driver has ever been fined for.
Several days ago at around midnight, a traffic enforcement camera caught the motorcyclist traveling more than three times the 90 km/h (56 mph) speed limit on Route 70 in northern Israel.
The record-breaking biker, a 24-year-old from Arraba, tried to evade attempts to arrest him. A police helicopter pursued him by air as several cruisers chased him down the road, law enforcement says.
The driver dodged a roadblock of several police vehicles set up further down the road and eventually reached a gas station, where he dismounted and began running.
Officers seized the motorcycle and pursued the driver until they caught him.
Police say the young man was brought to court for a second hearing yesterday, where a judge extended his detention until another ruling will be issued on the matter.
