The Democratic National Committee announces that US Vice President Kamala Harris has secured enough votes to be named the official Democratic presidential nominee, setting up a showdown with Republican Donald Trump in November.

Harris was the only candidate on the ballot for the five-day electronic vote after 4,000 delegates — the grassroots activists and politicians allocated during the primary process — signed petitions backing her candidacy.
