French citizens visiting Iran advised to leave ‘as soon as possible,’ in first warning over Tehran since tensions spiked

France urges its nationals visiting Iran to leave immediately amid simmering tensions in the region, with the Islamic Republic vowing revenge against Israel for the assassinations of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran on Wednesday and Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr in Beirut on Tuesday.

Israel killed the Hezbollah commander in an airstrike in Beirut after the terror group fired a rocket on the Druze town of Majdal Shams in the Golan Heights last weekend, killing 12 children on a soccer field.

Jerusalem has not taken responsibility for killing Haniyeh the following morning, but has been blamed by Tehran and Hamas.

“Due to the increased risk of a military escalation in the region, visiting French nationals still in Iran are invited to leave as soon as possible,” the French foreign ministry says.

Several Western countries have advised citizens against traveling to Israel and Lebanon amid the threat of widening conflict over the past week. However, none have made recommendations about Iran since it for the first time attacked the Jewish state directly in April in response to the killing of a senior army general in an alleged Israeli strike in Damascus.

On that occasion, Iran launched hundreds of missiles and drones at Israel, nearly all of which Israel was able to intercept with the help of US coordination with other forces in the region, including Britain, France, and some Arab states.
