Hamas says father, 8-year-old son killed in Gaza building collapse; reports say structure previously damaged

At least two people were killed and five wounded when a home collapsed in the central Gaza refugee camp of Maghazi, Hamas’s civil defense agency says.

The dead are identified as Ibrahim al-Shana, 29, and his son Muhammad al-Shana, 8. One of the wounded is in critical condition, the agency says.

The five-story building had been damaged during the war and collapsed this morning with people inside, according to Palestinian media.

The UN reported in October that over half of Gaza’s structures were destroyed in the war with Israel and that roughly 40 percent of the remaining structures are severely or moderately damaged.

Meanwhile, hundreds of thousands of displaced Gazans face flooding of their tents and shelters by heavy rains, and materials for shelters and sandbags are not being allowed to enter the enclave. COGAT, the Israeli Defense Ministry body that oversees aid to Gaza, has denied the allegations, saying it has let in hundreds of thousands of tents and tarpaulins and is waiting for international organizations to let in close to 100,000 pallets of “water-related items.”
