High Court adjourns hearing on Ben Gvir’s dismissal without issuing immediate decision

After a nearly 10-hour hearing on petitions urging the dismissal of National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, the High Court of Justice adjourns without issuing an immediate decision on the matter.

During the proceedings, judges repeatedly showed reluctance to grant petitioners their request and order Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to dismiss the far-right minister.

Instead, they hinted at a plan to enjoin the two to reach an agreement with Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara meant to curb Ben Gvir’s influence over law enforcement, without removing him from his post.

Closing out the hearing, High Court president Isaac Amit sharply criticizes Ben Gvir, who appeared at court earlier that morning before a crowd that held signs decrying Israel’s legal system as a “judicial dictatorship.”

As the politician spoke outside the courthouse, his supporters chanted that Amit and other justices were “traitors.”

“Even this hearing that took place here today, to a certain extent, normalized very harsh expressions, to say the least, by Minister Ben Gvir,” Amit says. “When one talks about judges and calls them enemies of the nation, that’s not a criticism, it’s something else.”
