The synagogue of the Sadigura Hasidic dynasty in Ukraine, known among Hassidim as the Kloiz Kadisha, was set on fire Thursday evening, Israeli media reports.
A man, said to be mentally disturbed, allegedly entered the synagogue in Sadigura and set it on fire when the guard briefly left his post. Police were called to the scene and arrested him, reports say.
Images show property damage, including burnt books and chairs, but the building appears largely intact.
The same man is believed to have also set fire to a church in the same area a month earlier.
The synagogue was built by Rabbi Israel of Ruzhin, the founder of the Sadigura dynasty, some 180 years ago. It was abandoned during World War I, and re‑consecrated and restored several years ago.
