Police arrest two people suspected of pulling guns on Haredi protesters

Police announce that they have arrested two individuals on suspicion of threatening Haredi demonstrators with their guns during mass protests yesterday against ultra-Orthodox conscription.

One of the suspects was filmed yesterday pointing his handgun at a group of demonstrators who were blocking the road to Jerusalem, while driving on Route 1.

Police say officers from the Harel station seized a gun from the suspect’s possession and jailed him after his interrogation. He will be brought to court for a remand hearing today.

The second suspect, who was filmed later that night on the same highway, does not possess a gun license. Police are still questioning him regarding the suspicion that he threatened demonstrators with a firearm.

Yesterday, thousands of ultra-Orthodox demonstrators took to highways across Israel to protest the detention of draft-evading yeshiva students, sparking clashes with motorists and causing widespread traffic throughout the country.

Protest convoys set out from over a dozen locations across the country toward Neve Tzedek (Beit Lid) military prison in Kfar Yona. Police turned away anyone who showed up and most participants, among them Haredi lawmakers, turned around and went home after around four hours on the road.
