Russia says it’s ready to resume US deal to avoid Syria clashes

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov says his country is prepared to resume its cooperation with the United States to avoid potential conflicts in the air over Syria, where both countries are currently operating.

Lavrov adds that the US and Russia are ready for an “uncompromising” fight against terrorism, during a press conference as part of a visit by US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.

After the US struck a Syrian air base in response to an apparent sarin gas attack by Syrian President Bashar Assad, Russia announced it was backing out of the arrangement.

In Syria, Russia is backing Assad and fighting the rebel forces that oppose him, including the Islamic State. The United States is leading an international coalition against the Islamic State.
