Universities delay start of academic year until November 5

In light of the ongoing security situation, Israeli institutes of higher education will delay the start of the 2023-2024 academic year until November 5.

The Council of University Heads confirms the decision and tells The Times of Israel a formal announcement will be released later in the day.

The fall semester was set to begin October 15, a week after the Jewish High Holidays, and a previous decision, made in the days immediately after the start of the Israel-Hamas war, had delayed this until October 22.

The unprecedented Hamas attack from the Gaza Strip on October 7, and the subsequent massive callup of Israeli reserve forces, has upended the university system, as critical amounts of students, teachers and staff have been called to serve.
