Two Israeli women were attacked and robbed by assailants wielding machetes in the coastal Kenyan town of Watamu on Saturday.

The attackers cut off a finger of one of the victims, and the other was left with unspecified injuries, according to media reports.

The two, who are tourists in the country, were taken by ambulance to a local hospital for treatment. Doctors were trying to reattach the severed finger.

The Foreign Ministry said in a statement Sunday that its consulate services were in contact with the two women and their families.

The ministry said it was working to expedite the visa application of the tourists’ relatives, so that they can join the women in Kenya while they recover in the hospital.

In July, Israeli citizen Francis Adbabayi was kidnapped and held for some three weeks in Ethiopia, until Ethiopian special forces liberated him from his captors, following a shootout near the Sudanese border.
