With their faces still masked as Palestinian flags wave in the background, several protesters wearing colorful party hats and gleefully eating cake were filmed Thursday taking a short break from demonstrations against the Israeli government to celebrate the birthday of one of their friends.
The footage shows about a dozen demonstrators, some with their heads entirely covered in a keffiyeh, lifting their comrade in the air, clapping and singing.
The protesters go on to eat what appears to be a chocolate cake with the words “Happy Birthday” written upon it in English.
The surreal scene, no doubt, sharply contrasts with the tense atmosphere which has been reigning in the region over the past few weeks.
“The dramatic combination between the clown hats and the keffiyeh is priceless,” Israeli journalist Elior Levy tweeted along a picture from the event.
