Iran’s semi-official Fars news agency reported Tuesday that Tehran has inaugurated a new long-range radar system capable of detecting small drones and ballistic missiles.

The Tuesday report said the system, dubbed as Sepehr or Sky, has a range of more than 2,500 kilometers or 1,550 miles, enough to reach Israel. The report claimed that the system could also detect satellites and track the trajectory of objects in Earth’s orbit.

Tehran regularly announces military advances that cannot be independently verified.

According to an Iranian official quoted in the report, the new radar system “can detect stealth targets and micro UAVs at low, medium and high altitudes while it can also very easily identify and detect ballistic, semi-ballistic and cruise missiles.”

Since 1992, Iran has launched a homegrown defense industry that produces light and heavy weapons ranging from mortars and torpedoes to tanks and submarines.

It has surface-to-surface missiles with a range of about 2,000 kilometers (1,250 miles), enough to reach Israel and US military bases in the region.
