Tehran announces export ban on basic goods in face of sanctions

TEHRAN, Iran — Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman says the standoff over Iran’s nuclear program could be resolved quickly should world powers recognize the country’s right to master the nuclear fuel cycle for peaceful purposes.

The Tuesday remarks by Ramin Mehmanparast during a press conference in Tehran underscored Iran’s push to resume talks with the five permanent UN Security Council members plus Germany.

Iran has indicated that it will be willing to negotiate suspension of its highest level of uranium enrichment in return for recognition of its nuclear rights and the lifting of tough Western sanctions that have squeezed its economy.

Also on Tuesday, Reuters reported that Iran has instituted an export ban on around 50 goods including wheat, flour, sugar and aluminum. The move is intended to conserve supplies of essential products as the sanctions against Iran intensify.

Meanwhile, Iran’s regular army has begun a two-day ground and air military exercise aimed at upgrading its combat readiness and increasing its deterrence against possible attacks.

State TV said the drills involve forces in a wide region in western Iran near the Iraqi border. It showed troops parachuting from helicopters near the towns of Sarpol-e Zahab and Qasr-e Shirin, about 700 kilometers (430 miles) west of Tehran.
