Sarah Silverman gives Meretz a push
Comedian calls on supporters of the left-wing party to not be complacent about casting their ballots

US comedian Sarah Silverman doesn’t joke around when it comes to Israeli politics — on Wednesday she posted a message on the internet calling on supporters of the hard-left Meretz party to vote in Israeli elections, scheduled for next week.
“ISRAEL! If you are a Meretz supporter you NEED to VOTE MARCH 17. Every vote counts. If you don’t vote, you can’t complain,” Silverman wrote an hour before posting an unrelated link to a photograph of her crotch.
The Meretz party was delighted with the celebrity rally call and quickly responded to Silverman’s tweet.
“Thanks for the support Sarah! We love you!” the party replied from its official Twitter account.

Meretz leader MK Zahav Gal-on also had some fun and posted Silverman’s tweet on her Facebook page along with a comment “Warning! Foreign elements are trying to bring down the government.”
She was poking fun at Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu who has warned of a “concerted” effort, backed by international interests, to bring down his government.
Recent polls predict Meretz is likely to win around six seats in the coming elections, scheduled for March 17.
Silverman is known for her strong Jewish identity and has not shied from commenting on the Israeli-Arab conflict in the past.
During the 2014 Operation Protective Edge, as the IDF battled against Hamas in the Gaza Strip, Silverman was one of 300 Hollywood celebrities who signed an open letter in The New York Times blaming Hamas for the fighting and the casualties on both sides. She has also visited Israel where she has performed, received awards, and participated in events including Women of the Wall prayer sessions demanding equal prayer rights for women at the Western Wall.
